Snowball: New Rugged Storage Appliance From Amazon for Importing Data to AWS Via Fedex

1 Comment and 3 Shares

Frederic Lardinois, writing for TechCrunch:

Amazon surprised developers today with the launch of Snowball, a new physical appliance that will allow AWS users to ship huge amounts of data for import into AWS by shipping the device back and forth between their offices and the AWS data centers.

The appliance is a bit larger than an old-school desktop case and it can hold up to 50 terabytes of data. It has a Kindle on the side, which functions as an automatic shipping label.

Reminds me of the old Andrew Tanenbaum quote: “Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.”

The Players’ Tribune

1 Comment and 2 Shares

Derek Jeter:

I do think fans deserve more than “no comments” or “I don’t knows.” Those simple answers have always stemmed from a genuine concern that any statement, any opinion or detail, might be distorted. I have a unique perspective. Many of you saw me after that final home game, when the enormity of the moment hit me. I’m not a robot. Neither are the other athletes who at times might seem unapproachable. We all have emotions. We just need to be sure our thoughts will come across the way we intend.

So I’m in the process of building a place where athletes have the tools they need to share what they really think and feel. We want to have a way to connect directly with our fans, with no filter.

Nice design.

I am working with other athletes, with editors and with producers to create a platform that gives us a chance to say what’s on our minds. It’s called The Players’ Tribune. Over the next few months, we’ll be introducing a strong core of athlete editors and contributors who will shape the site into an online community filled with first-person stories and behind-the-scenes content."

Tokyo's New Final Fantasy Cafe Is Beautiful

That shouldn't come as a surprise: Final Fantasy games are usually beautiful, too. But I'll tell you what, this Final Fantasy XIV themed eatery is a stunner.

Rethinking the Airline Boarding Pass

Peter Smart redesigns the boarding pass. Great work, especially the emphasis on hierarchy.

I think paper boarding passes are going the way of the dodo, but even so, his design would work pretty well for a pass on a mobile phone, too.
